Clean Air, Green Cities – USAID

Project Title:
Clean Air Green Cities
Location:
Ba Dinh district and Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi, Vietnam
Period:
12 months (11/2017-11/2018)

Air pollution has become a concern of the people in the big cities of Vietnam by its impacts on human health, especially children. The Clean Air – Green City Project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and  is implemented by Viet Nam Green Generation Network, Center for Living and Learning for Environment and Community (Live & Learn) with Center for Supporting Green Development (GreenHub) and Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The project aims to address air pollution and the impact of air pollution on health in Hanoi City through mobilizing a network of local partners (including youth, schools, communities, social organizations, business and government) to advocate for policy and act together for a cleaner atmosphere.

Centre for Supporting Green Development GreenHub is one of three main partners of the project, responsible for promoting waste management and energy technology initiatives. GreenHub will facilitate youth- and women-led initiatives in waste management and waste to energy technology: The current practices (using coal energy  for food preparation, pig farming and daily cooking in traditional cook-stoves and small boilers in handicraft villages) in Hanoi also cause serious air pollution, unnecessary carbon emissions and health impacts, especially for poor women, the direct users of cook-stoves. GreenHub will introduce safer and low-emission options and provide technical and financial support to enable business growth, technology improvement, and adoption.

Activities:

  • Conduct surveys and meetings with local communities to assess the needs and with relevant stakeholders to review and select appropriate interventions (women groups).
  •  Organize at least 2 events to run the contest on improved cookstoves with low emission, applying waste to energy.
  • Design the model(s) and marketing materials.
  •  Supporting 140 small business and households using bee-hive cookstoves to switch to other environmentally friendly stoves.
