2022 marine waste monitoring in Hoi An (Phase 1)

On August 4, 5, and 6, the 2022 marine waste monitoring in Hoi An (phase 1) took place at 3 beaches in Cua Dai area under the chairmanship of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Hoi An and supported by the Centre for Supporting Green Development (GreenHub) and the professional consulting unit of the Management Board of the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area.

The core group consists of 25 members who are the representatives of Cua Dai ward’s executive board, the Youth Union, the Women’s Union of Cua Dai ward, the Hoi An environment club (S.E.A Club), and 2 representatives from Sunrise Premium Resort Hoi An and Vinpearl Resort & Spa Hoi An enthusiastically participated in practicing marine waste monitoring method that was previously trained in the field. In addition, after each monitoring session, the members together organize a beach cleanup. In particular, the application of the “citizen science” method with the companionship of consultants helped the residents to participate. This is an important step in promoting the dangers of plastic waste, thus many local initiatives and methods of reducing plastic can be found.

Especially, on the morning of August 6, the activity had the participation of Mr. Ngo Tien Loi – Representative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Van – 2 representatives from the Centre for Supporting Green Development (GreenHub).

The 2022 marine waste monitoring in Hoi An (phase 1) has brought a lot of foundation knowledge and practices so that the locality can continue to implement it in the near future.

The activity is organized within the scope of the project “Local Solutions for Plastic Pollution” (LSPP) sponsored by USAID under the program “Vietnam Local Works for Environmental Health”, implemented by GreenHub and 03 partners (ISPONRE, HUPH-VOHUN, GIMASYS).
